The final of the 7th edition competition!

8th May 2021 was the celebration of children's books at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice!

Dear contestants, book and illustration lovers, illustrators, designers, librarians and publishers!

We invite you to visit the post-competition exhibition of wonderful illustrations and books for children.

The exhibition is available to visitors from May 8 to June 8, 2021, in the Gallery+
(1st floor), at the Roundabout Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice
, during the gallery's opening hours and in accordance with current epidemiological guidelines.
Admission to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition presents 80 great and very diverse projects, including Some People and Today is the day Tzu-Chun Chang, which the Competition’s Jury as well as Children’s Jury awarded the main prize.

The winners of this edition of the competition were announced on the exhibition opening day – May 8, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. A video of their announcement can be viewed, among others on our Facebook.

Meanwhile, the virtual deliberations of three independent groups – the Competition Jury, the Children's Jury and the Publishers Jury – are behind us.

On 11 December 2020, the Jury composed of:

Barbara Kęsek – publisher (Cracow)
Magda Kłos-Podsiadło – publisher (Wytwórnia Publishing House, Warsaw)
Ewa Kokot – art educator, animator (Insea Poland, Katowice)
Krystyna Lipka-Sztarbałło – ilustrator and author (Warszawa)
Agnieszka Małecka-Kwiatkowska – designer, teacher (Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice)
Jakub Sowiński – designer, teacher (Academy of Fine Arts in Crocow)

after seeing 252 works of 190 authors qualified 80 works of 74 authors for the post-competition exhibition.

The Competition Jury awarded 3 prizes and 7 honorable mentions.
The Children's Jury – 3 equal prizes.
The publishing houses – Debit, Ezop, Format, Wytwórnia and Znak ­– also awarded their prizes and distinctions.

The winners of the competition will be announced on the exhibition opening day – May 8, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. The event will be available live online on Facebook channels: A well designed book, Rondo Sztuki and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice.

ATTENTION! IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE REGULATIONS

In the interest of the prevailing COVID-19 epidemic, for the sake of health and safety, and to make it easier for competition participants to print out works at a convenient and safe time, we are updating the Competition Regulations. Changes relate to the manner in which the Jury deliberates and hence to how to submit competition entries.

Summarizing:

1. Until June 30, 2020 entries must be submitted only via the platform www.kdz.asp.katowice.pl.
2. The jury will qualify the works for the exhibition in the first stage.
3. The entries must be sent by post after receiving e-mail confirmation of qualification for the second stage of the competition – between September 15 and October 31, 2020.

We would also like to assure you that if the entry has already been sent by post to us before introducing changes to the Competition Regulations we will confirm receiving it by e-mail and it will be safely stored until the second stage of the Jury's deliberations.

For the seventh time we are opening a Competition for the best design of a book for children as part of the event A well designed book – let's start with children.

The Competition will award the best projects in which individuality and artistic originality go hand in hand  with a form suitable for children of certain age groups.

We want to promote young artists on the publishing market, that is why, in this edition we have been joined by publishers – Debit and Ezop – who shared the texts and set out detailed conditions to illustrate them (you will find them in the attachment below).

Competition FAQ:

WHAT can be submitted in the Competition?

  • Illustrations for any text (min. set of 4)
  • Design of a complete book
  • Design of a book application
  • 3 illustrations to a selected text proposed by the publishers as part of the Competition, made according to their guidelines (you will find them in the attachment below)

All projects should be aimed at children – and the age of the recipient should be specified upon submission.
The number of submitted works is unlimited, but they cannot be previously published on the publishing market.

WHO can take part?

Students and graduates (2018–2019) of art and design universities in Poland and abroad.
Individually or as a team.

HOW?

First, you have to register for the Competition via platform https://kdz.asp.katowice.pl

In the same panel you should upload the submitted project in files (TIFF, 300dpi). 

Then, send it in the form of print-outs marked with an identification card (you will find it in the attachment below) – by post – to the address:

WHEN?

The submission of works via panel must be done by 30 June 2020.

Shipments by post must be done after receiving an e-mail confirmation of qualification for the second stage of the competition – between September 15 and October 31, 2020 (the date of receipt of the submitted works is decisive).

The finalists of the Competition will be notified about their participation in the exhibition via e-mail by August 1, 2020.

The results of the competition will be announced during the celebratory opening of the post-competition exhibition on April 23, 2021.

PRIZES

The finalists selected by the Jury will take part in an international post-competition exhibition, which will be exhibited at the Roundabout Gallery in Katowice.

Winners will receive statutory prizes:
1st prize – PLN 6000
2nd prize – PLN 4000
3rd prize – PLN 2000

The Publishers' own prizes will also be awarded, according to the description attached to the texts.

And also surprise awards of the Children's Jury.
