    Programme Description

Designing Reading Experience and Interactive Storytelling
Projektowanie doświadczenia czytania oraz narracje interaktywne

Designing Reading Experience and Interactive Storytelling is an interdisciplinary, master’s programme of studies in English within the framework of the Graphic Design programme offered by the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. It prepares its future graduates to face and tackle complex design challenges related to the experience of reading, that is to the analysis and comprehension of content and to the communication of ideas, conceptions and solutions by means of employing universal techniques of story-telling based on narratives, interaction, and on time-based media.

The studies in Designing Reading Experience and Interactive Storytelling will provide you with the theoretical background, research methods and tools that will allow you to approach designing graphic communication as both a theoretical and a practical skill. You will learn how to define the design issues of key importance to your audience. You will gain a broad cultural perspective on graphic design and benefit from the experience and expertise of our highly competent faculty members, who are professionally active in the design market, as well as from the know-how of our external experts. You will learn to respond to the challenges of the contemporary world.

The reality we live in consists of an abundance of information encoded by means of signs, texts, ideograms, and symbols. On the one hand, they all require continuous decoding, on the other, they also compel us to write and encode new meanings and messages. The experience of reading, in its broad understanding, is therefore indispensable not only to comprehend and to function in the present, but also to be active in giving it new shapes. Here, at the Academy, we understand that such qualities as the precision, clarity, and purity of the message are paramount. We also understand that they acquire new significance in the ever-accelerating reality of modern life. In response to this, our new master’s programme has been facilitated by the many years of our artistic experience and by our knowledge, awareness and the ability to recognize most recent trends in design, with particular regard to typography.

The experience and the knowledge you will gain with us will prepare you to work on editorial projects, in typography (including font design), on visual identification, data visualization, digital publishing, interfaces (both UI and UX), and the new media (animation, film, installations, VR) for the public sector, cultural institutions, business and other ventures.

  • DESIGN

    Programme description

Inclusive Design: Health and Social Well-Being
Projektowanie włączające: zdrowie i społeczny dobrostan.

Inclusive Design: Health and Social Well-Being is an interdisciplinary master’s programme of studies in English offered by the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. It prepares its future graduates to face and tackle complex challenges related to the role of design in improving the quality of life, well-being and public health by including users in the design process.

This innovative and unique two-year programme of studies has been devised by the staff of the Faculty of Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice with the assistance and advice of external experts from such institutions as the Helen Hamlyn Centre For Design, EIDD, TU Delft, University of Hasselt, Gehl People, and other experts active in the field.

The programme will help you master the research methods and tools that will facilitate both a theoretical and a hands-on approach to modern design. You will learn how to define key conceptual issues, how to select the right tools and methods for the users of your work and how to engage and include them in the whole process. In doing so, you will benefit from the most recent approaches of User-Oriented, Human-Centred and Inclusive Design. You will also explore the potential behind the application of Integrated Product Design, Experience and Interaction Design, and of the Social and Service Design. You will gain an in-depth knowledge and experience by studying research methodologies and by conducting your own research, experimentation, prototyping, applying state-of-the-art technologies and design implementation methods. You will work on actual projects, in realistic conditions, together with institutional and business partners within the area of social well-being; your work will enhance social relations, the quality of life and of the environment, improve the psychophysical condition of society, and support health-related care on an everyday basis.

Over the past few years, attitudes towards designing products and services have experienced profound changes. Today, successful design solutions are those that improve the individual quality of life, those that are coherent, and those that in a sustainable, seamless, and sometimes even imperceptible way become part of the life of their users. Thus, understanding their multiple needs, potential, and aspirations is crucial to what is called “conscientious and inclusive design”. Hence the steadily increasing demand for designers who are able to see the project from the perspective of its various users, regardless of their backgrounds, skills, and age. Such thinking about design involves also a responsible attitude to the world, to the natural environment, to the society in which we live, to our kith and kin, and, eventually, to ourselves.

The experience and the knowledge you will gain with us will prepare you to work as a designer of products, services, interactions, and as a design consultant for private and public ventures. It will also give you the necessary background to work in Research and Development teams in commercial and scientific institutions.
