The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice trains students in three areas: graphic arts, painting and design, in artistic and design faculties. The learning process covers two stages: BA and MA.
A modern form of teaching allows students to individually shape the programmes of their studies while the option of selecting their subjects from all the departments ensures a wide offer and facilitates a comprehensive preparation for their future artistic or design work.
The Faculty of Design
The Chair of Graphic Design trains students in all areas essential for a modern graphic designer in his or her work such as typography, lettering, photography, editorial graphic arts, designing of posters, illustrations, books, web pages, new media and multimedia. The classes involve research, analysis and providing strong theoretical foundations on one hand, and on the other the development of the individual’s abilities in composition, drawing, painting and graphic arts.
The teaching process draws on the most modern technologies and allows students to create the most technically advanced mobile digital images. The Chair of Industrial Form Design addresses issues connected with designing a new product in the context of functional processes, visual communications and related artistic and technical problems. The Chair of Visual Communications Design addresses issues connected with designing information systems, signs, multimedia identity and statistical data. The Division of Visual Research and Interactions carries out experimental research and didactic activities in the field of perception and human behaviour. The didactic process aims at mastering the ability of analysis, critical evaluation and reasoning, paying particular attention to the functionality and social and cultural context.
The Faculty of Art
The Chair of Painting trains students in the field of painting, drawing and interdisciplinary activities in thirteen studios. The studios’ programmes based on the tradition and the most interesting phenomena in contemporary art are original in nature and are implemented by teachers, outstanding artists. Complementary to core subjects are courses in composition, painting technology and sculpture.
The Chair of Graphic Art, with its rich traditions, trains students in the field of graphic arts in all classical techniques, from wood engraving to digital printing, while extending its offer with modern multimedia, intermedia and interdisciplinary studios. Furthermore, it allows students to create their works in artistic book and graphic design studios. Solid foundations developed through general artistic subjects such as drawing, painting, sculpture or composition guarantee an education process of the highest level resulting in the leading international position of graphic arts in Katowice.
